Maternity Insurance

maternity insurance Maternity InsuranceFor growing families, we offer maternity insurance that pays cash for a hospital confinement.

Supplemental policies are available that pay you directly for childbirth as long as it occurs while confined in a hospital. These plans are now only available on payroll deduction. They are general hospitalization and sickness indemnities that also include benefits for maternity. That means some have benefits for non-maternity sickness and hospitalization, as well. To pay a childbirth benefit, the effective date of coverage must be a full 10 months prior to delivery.

Hospitalization or sickness/hospitalization indemnities –  along with the appropriate riders, these pay $1600 to $2200 for normal delivery, two days hospital confinement. More for cesarean section delivery, which may also extend the hospital confinement, which leads to additional benefits. Should the newborn baby need to be admitted to the hospital, the newborn is automatically covered and the policies pay accordingly. The newborn’s coverage is for 30 days without additional premium.

Intensive care indemnity – a wise addition, especially if the mother-to-be has never been pregnant before, or if she expects to be prone to having twins. As for the hospitalization and sickness indemnities, even if the mother is the only insured listed on the policy, should the newborn need to be admitted to the neonatal ICU, then the newborn is automatically covered for the next 30 days without additional premium.

Short term disability – if the mother-to-be is working full time and making at least $15,000 per year, then this is an option to pursue. Following a 7-day elimination period, legitimate disability (substantiated by physician and employer) may be payable for 6 weeks following vaginal delivery, 8 weeks following cesarean section delivery. The “monthly” disability income benefit has a legal limit based on the insured’s income at the time of applying for the policy.

Remember, individual health insurance in Idaho has a separate maternity deductible of at least $5000! That deductible is only the beginning out of pocket expenses, so seriously consider these supplemental options!
